A C-Print Captionist provides real-time in-class captioning services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing using a specialized computer program. Typing skills, awareness of phonetics, excellent listening and English skills, ability to process spoken information, experience with computers and word processing applications, completion of online course and a genuine desire to learn are required. In addition awareness of the unique access challenges of deaf or hard of hearing students as well as some deaf culture and sign language are preferred. Â
Responsibilities:
IN CLASS:Â Â

Attend and caption classes as an accommodation for students with a hearing loss or have other disabilities that require this accommodation, providing an accurate representation in text of the material covered in class. Â

Effectively maintain and troubleshoot equipment and minor technical difficulties to ensure uninterrupted service. Â

Abide by confidentiality protocols and follow appropriate professional guidelines as outlined by the Code of Ethics. Â

Support and advocate for students’ needs in the classroom, including tutoring under the supervision of licensed educators as well as serving as a liaison promoting good public relations between teacher of deaf/hard of hearing, deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing peers, and staff. Â

Ability to match communication to the mode and ability level of student. Knowledge and understanding of child development.
OUT OF CLASSROOM:Â Â

Complete the C-Print training to learn the abbreviation system as provided by NTID/RIT. Â

Receive, reformat and upload documents from teachers to captioning software. Â

Work collaboratively with school teams team to ensure their awareness of the services, requirements and use of materials. Â

Edit, review, and print captioned notes to ensure accuracy and clarity of information as well as conferring with teachers in order to be prepared for captioning/interpreting services. Â

Distribute copies of captioned notes to appropriate personnel on educational team. Â

Keep an archive of captioned notes for each class throughout the year. Â

Maintain and upgrade transcription and language skill level through professional development. Â

Collaborate with team in the provision of deaf culture awareness information and research with assistive technologies. Â

Ongoing professional training of C-Print skills.
