Desired Qualifications:

  • Valid Minnesota teaching license in American Indian Language & Culture (or ability to obtain such)

  • Experience teaching in an urban high school

  • Experience co-teaching with a special education teacher

  • Experience collaborating with students, families, and the intercultural communities our school serves

  • Track record of success serving youth with significant developmental risk factors

  • All qualities of a Star Teacher (Haberman)

  • Training and experience with Circle of Courage, including RAP or LSCI

  • Training and experience with restorative justice

  • Teaching experience in a charter school

Indian Education Teacher Essential Job Functions:

  • Cultivating strong, positive relationships with students

  • Teaching in a classroom setting

  • Incorporating active, experiential learning opportunities in daily lessons

  • Working with students, parents, teachers, and student support team to address challenges to students’ academic progress

  • Managing classroom activities and behaviors effectively

  • Providing positive behavior interventions for students based on the Academy’s principles of authoritative instruction

  • Recording, reporting, and evaluating student academic and behavioral data

  • Attending monthly Family Night, Academic Conferences, Prom, Graduation, and all other required events

  • Other duties as assigned

Indian Education Home/School Liaison Essential Job Functions:

  • Cultivating strong, positive relationships with students

  • Function in a proactive manner to ensure that Indigenous students have access to the support systems needed to succeed as learners at AFA

  • Build and maintain positive connections between parents of Indigenous students and the school

  • Offer support to all Indigenous students enrolled 

  • Collaborate with counselors, school social worker, administrators, and staff to provide support services

  • Work with counselors, administrators, and other support services personnel to provide crisis intervention services for Indigenous students. 

  • Provide conflict mediation services for Indigenous students 

  • Attend academic and behavior conferences, make home visits, and provide outreach services to parents of Indigenous students

  • Make community referrals as necessary to families and follow-up support services

  • Assist new Indigenous families with registration, orientation, and follow-up services

  • Participate in child study and student assistance teams related to students on caseload

  • Perform other tasks within the level of responsibility of the position as assigned by the supervisor

  • Provide enrichment opportunities for students (Indigenous literature, emphasizing vocabulary and reading comprehension).

  • Work collaboratively with the American Indian Parent Committee to seek grants

  • Facilitate American Indian Parent Committee meetings

Position Logistics:

  • Monday – Thursday from 7:45am-4:00pm

  • Compensation based on the Augsburg Fairview Academy FY25 salary schedule
