Athletic Coach / Activities Advisor
High School Assistant Speech Coach Position

General Definition of Work:
An athletic coach /activities advisor coaches, supervises, manages, coordinates, and plans all practices pre-season, in-season, and post-season. The athletic coach/ activities advisor is also responsible for coaching/advising, supervising, and managing all athletic and activity competitions.  The total operation of the extracurricular programs, athletics, activities, transportation, and related athletic facility operations for grades 6-12. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Activities Director.

Essential Functions

  • Learns and adheres to the coaching/advising philosophy and program of the school district as lead by the Activities Director.
  • Assists in explaining and distributing literature to all athletes concerning the athletic commitment and the protection of student eligibility.
  • Teaches athletes the fundamental skills, theory, and strategy of the sport/activity.
  • Teaches the athletes the value of good conduct, sportsmanship, and good citizenship.
  • Provides supervision of athletes at all times and applies discipline when needed.
  • Teaches and emphasizes safe procedures to the athletes.
  • Leads or assists other coaches and advisors with out-of-season training as needed depending on the level of coaching/advising assignment.
  • Attends and/or conducts awards programs.
  • Assists in the responsibility of the care of equipment and facilities being used.
  • Assists in the issuance, return, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assists in ensuring that all equipment is cleaned, repaired, and stored properly at the ends of the season.
  • Makes recommendations to the Activities Director regarding needed equipment and repairs to facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned and appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of Minnesota State High School League website, handbooks, and calendars and scheduling system; general knowledge of Minnesota Department of Education website, Infinite Campus software; and Impact Test Online; thorough knowledge of District Website and Infinite Campus Reports; thorough knowledge of standard office equipment; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and elected officials.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current district staff member preferred but not required.
  • Teaching and coaching license preferred but not required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing and walking; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements
Valid driver’s license.
Current Head Coaching license through MDE or willing to obtain for position
