AMERICAN INDIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM
AMERICAN INDIAN HOME-SCHOOL LIAISON
JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports to:
• Building Principal and Director of American Indian Education Program

Purpose of Position:
• Tutor and advocate for American Indian students within a specified school in ISD #94, and maintain and support contact between schools and students’ families.

Essential Function of Position (specialized, frequent, and critical activities of this position):
• Tutor American Indian students on basic skills and class work, as directed by teachers.
• Advocate for American Indian students, some with special needs.
• Record and evaluate student progress and assess student needs.
• Attend and share details from IEP and staff meetings, as well as pupil planning sessions whenever needed (as established by either the Elementary Coordinator or Director for American Indian Education).
• Cooperate with school staff, standards, guidelines and expectations.
• Network and confer with Indian Education staff, Attendance Coordinator, Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Guidance Counselor, and ISD #94 staff and faculty on student progress.
• Assist parent(s)/guardian(s) with Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
• Understanding and sharing aspects of American Indian culture and the nature of our program.
• Enlighten parent(s)/guardian(s) in school policies and decisions made in the student’s best interests.
• Establish a schedule with staff and students.

Marginal Function of Position (non-essential activities of this position):
• Encourage students to participate in school activities and community programs.
• Develop and create incentives towards academic success.
• Assist with various special events at the Cloquet Public Schools.
• Answer phones.
• Assist fellow staff with additional students from time to time.
• Report any student data requested by the building principal and the AIEP Director.
• Attend parent/teacher conferences & LIEC Parent Committee Meetings.

Principal Working Relationships:
School staff and students; especially American Indian students, Academic Tutors and Indian Home-School Liaisons, Director for American Indian Education, and American Indian Education and building principal, as needed.
Academic and Experience Qualifications Required:
A two-year (Associates) degree or higher education is expected in order to help our students become rounded and successful.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
Know or learn how to utilize Infinite Campus, Appleworks, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office and SMART Board applications and tools.
Types of Tools/Equipment Used:
Macintosh and IB compatible computers, copy machines, and phones.
Physical/Emotional/Intellectual Demands of the Position:
The successful applicant will need to understand and adapt to new developments and mandates in curriculum, and use that understanding in the classroom and develop, know, and utilize diverse teaching approaches to individual students. Patience and consideration will be expected due to the diverse academic and social needs of many students.
