General Statement of Duties
Performs entry level bookkeeping or accounting work maintaining and auditing financial records or keeping books for specific accounts; and performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received
Works under the close technical and administrative supervision of an accountant or a higher level accounting technician.

Typical Duties Performed
The listed examples may not include all the duties performed by all positions in this class.
Maintains accounts including cashbooks, voucher registers and general ledgers; posts entries to various accounts and makes simple trial balances.Â
Audits and maintains records of financial transaction including requisitions, purchases and invoices.Â
Performs arithmetic computations and accounting extensions.Â
Processes requests for, and orders, supplies; maintains stock or inventory records.Â
Types on occasion routine material not requiring speed.Â
Maintains petty cash fund; maintains related files and records.Â
Compiles and prepares financial statements, including balance sheets, reconciliation sheets, bank statements and budget reports.Â
Assists in compiling and preparing materials for budget estimates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Some knowledge of accounting practices and theories.Â
Working knowledge of basic modern bookkeeping practices and procedures.Â
Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.Â
Working ability to operate modern office equipment.Â
Working ability to make arithmetic computations by hand or by adding machine.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and at least 15 credit hours in courses acceptable toward the junior accounting certificate as given by the University of Minnesota (certain courses may be substituted for those required for the junior accounting certificate); and two years of experience as an Accounting Clerk 2 or equivalent. Each additional year of qualifying experience may be substituted for five credit hours.
Exam Information
A civil service test will be administered to create an open entrance eligible list of candidates for this classified civil service position. You will be notified via email of the exam. Â Once a list is created, it will be used for all Accounting Technician 1 positions that may occur for up to 1 year from the date of the exam.
The test is available for all qualified candidates.
Weight:Â Â Â Â Â Â 100% Practical ExaminationÂ
A passing score of at least 75% is required on the exam. You will be notified of the results of the exam via email.

This is a 12 month position working 40 hours per week.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the AFSCME negotiated labor agreement. The labor agreement and salary schedule can be found at https://www.spps.org/Page/33566. The minimum rate of pay for this position is $24.06 per hour.
