Duty Hours Per Year: varying at Early Childhood Family Center (ECFC) or potentially at St. Francis Elementary School (SFES) in our preschool class

Hours Per Day:  varying, classes are Monday-Thursday morning and afternoon, Friday morning

Type of Position: () Continuing  (X) Temporary

Salary: Level III per Educational Assistant Work Agreement

Supervisor of Position:  Kandi Danielson, Early Childhood Special Education Program Supervisor

Qualifications: 

  • Have a desire to work in a preschool setting with students with learning/behavior challenges
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) is required.  Additional coursework in child development and/or experience in working with children is preferred
  • Must be P.C.A. (Personal Care Assistant) certified;  will provide, if you do not already have this certification
  • Effective communication skills, good interpersonal skills with adults and children

Summary of Duties: 

An Early Childhood Educational Assistant (EA) works in a regular preschool classroom with children ages 3, 4, or 5 years old.  The EA works under the direction and guidance of both a classroom teacher and special education teacher.  The primary focus of the job is to work with the educational team to help these young students develop age-typical skills in the areas of communication, social interaction, self-regulation and cognition.  This position may also include time working in a center based classroom for part of the day/school year.  The center based classroom time is based on student need and may increase and decrease over the school year pending student need. A change in hours/days worked could occur depending on student need at the beginning of the school year.  There would be the potential to sub within the program when not scheduled to work.

Other aspects of the job include:

  • Assist in supervision, instruction, and personal care of 3-5 year old children who are behind in their overall development.
  • Under the supervision and direction of licensed teachers, assist students in achieving their developmental goals as outlined in their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • This position may involve hands-on activities within the classrooms, such as lifting/physically supporting and positioning students.  Students may also require assistance in personal care functions (bathroom, feeding, self-care, etc).
  • Record data, to monitor individual student activities and progress.
