Music Teacher (7-12) for School Year 2024-2025

Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students’ understanding, appreciation of the art of music, including listening to a wide range of musical genres, periods and styles.The music teacher is responsible for developing music curriculum and teaching classes, and also for planning and orchestrating major celebrations during school. The music teacher is expected to attend staff meetings and retreats, and to participate in the life of the school. 

Responsibilities

  • Instills aesthetic principles of music.

  • Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and/or choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble).

  • Plans a balanced music program and organized daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.

  • Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for ages and skill levels of students.

  • Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

  • Evaluates each student’s musical growth and performance, sets goals and objectives for performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.

  • Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

  • Communicates with parents on student progress and behavior.

  • Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions

  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.

  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.

  • Planning and helping at schools celebration events

  • Other duties may be assigned by the supervisor.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in music.

  • A valid Minnesota Teacher’s Licensure (applicable level-area endorsements preferred).

  • Professional verification of successful classroom teacher performance and/or student teaching experience.

  • Teaching experience in diverse cultural settings is valued.
