Job Summary:

At Aurora Charter School, we believe our greatest resource is the people who form our team.   The Health and Wellness 6th-8th Grade Teacher under the supervision of the principal is responsible for creating a dual-language immersion (Spanish) classroom environment that develops student’s awareness and understanding of health and nutrition, biological functions, the importance of mental well-being; and to motivate students to work towards healthy habits for life. This class will be taught entirely in Spanish. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops and administers Health Education classes consistent with school district goals and objectives. 

  • Teaches knowledge and understanding of physiology, health and nutrition, anatomy and biological functions. 

  • Develops students’ concepts in nutrition and related topics. 

  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

  • Collaborates with other staff members, especially within physical education and grade level, and participates in faculty meetings, Aurora professional development opportunities and committees. 

  • Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including curriculum nights, parent/teacher conferences  and school events. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), possess an Academic Spanish level  

  • Knowledge of current health education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles and levels.

  • Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being.

  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all internal and external individuals who support our students and families. 

Education and Experience:

  • MN teaching license in Health Education

  • Must be proficient in Academic Spanish 

  • Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment, must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License or state identification, must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, and must comply with organizational and district policies. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Required to lift or carry classroom supplies, textbooks, furniture, and equipment to a minimum of 35 pounds.  

  • Required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, grab, pull, hear, see, and speak on a daily basis.

  • Required to perform repetitive physical tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading
